CMMI® Overview
The CMMI® has been in use since 2000 and consists of five maturity levels and
22 Process Areas such as configuration management and quality assurance.
CMMI® Model - General Structure

|
A maturity level of 1 to 5 indicates the overall capability of an organization for
staged representations only
Each process area is a cluster of related practices that, when performed collectively,
satisfy a set of goals considered important for making significant improvement in
that area. In continuous representations, a capability level of 0 to 5 is determined
for each selected process area.
Specific goals describe what must be implemented to satisfy each process area. Generic
goals address common features for implementation or institutionalization.
Practices are the activities considered important in achieving the associated goal.
Specific practices describe the activities expected to result in achievement of
the specific goals of a process area. Generic practices provide institutionalization
to ensure that the processes associated with the process area will be effective,
repeatable, and lasting.
