Insights on the new Indy 500 logo

Indy 500 Logo

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway recently released their logo for the 103rd Running of the Indianapolis 500. We asked our three inhouse designers for their insight on the new logo.

What was your first reaction to the new logo?
Answers:

It feels too generic. Along the same line as the updated Super Bowl logos, which I’m not a fan of either.
-Michael Meek

It’s nice, clean, and safe. Similar to how many major companies are going with their rebrands the past ten years or so. Overall I’m in favor of the logo’s look.
-Ben Porter

Do you think this was a good idea to design something that will be the core of future logos?

Answers:

It is never a bad idea to have equity built into a brand, much like other big brands and sporting events like the Super Bowl, Masters, etc. I feel the core design will take away excitement from logo reveals. You have an indication of what the core logo will look like for future logos.
-Brett Nicholson

I see the thought process behind it, but I’m not a fan of that approach. I prefer a unique Indy 500 logo that helps separate yearly memories as I add to my race memorabilia collection, when I browse through old race ticket stubs or when I go back and research previous races. I’m afraid a logo that looks similar year-to-year will lose the impact that each individual race brings when they build up the Indy 500 as an overarching historic event.

Thoughts on the color scheme? Why do you think they chose the navy blue and gold? Do they mesh well with the Indy 500?

Answers:

Here’s where I can get on board. I do believe the colors mesh really well with the race, and overall brand.
-Michael Meek

I believe navy blue, gold and red brick were chosen as a statement to the tradition and history of the 500. Also, solidifying the strength and prestige of the 500 mile race. While the color pallet works well for those reasons, I believe they take away from the excitement of the month of May and the festivities involved with it.

Athletic, Prestigious and Confident is how IMS describes the logo. Do you think the logo represents this?

Answers:

I definitely see the athletic in comparison to other recent sports related logos. I also see confident, due to the bold fonts and solid shapes. I’m having a harder time with prestigious, based on the fact that the logo’s style has more of a clean modern take on a retro look.
-Ben Porter

I definitely pick up on the prestigious and athleticism of the lockup. Confident? Not so much. Like I said previously, it feels more generic than confident and leaves more to be desired.
-Michael Meek

What’s your favorite all-time Indy 500 logo and why?

Answers:
2018 102nd logo. The logo is simple, yet bold, powerful and confident, while having a patriotic feel with the red, blue and gray. The wing and wheel, and track shape are present, keeping tradition and history within the logo.
-Brett Nicholson

With a 100+ years of history, there are lot to choose from, but one that stands out to me is the 2015 logo. It has a great take on incorporating past visual elements used in racing logos, but with a modern, yet detailed polish to it. The 2015 logo portrays prestige, history, racing, a touch of Americana, but most importantly, it invokes excitement!
-Ben Porter

There are numerous elements of past logo’s I like, but as a whole, the 2018 logo is probably my favorite. The boldness of the type, the way all the elements interact with each other and the color scheme. Everything working together to make one, pretty rad, logo.
